Years & Years Dive Into a Fantasy Land With Otherworldly ‘Crave’ Music Video: Watch

Fans having been craving new music from Years & Years, and Olly Alexander has finally indulged them.

On Tuesday (Sept. 28), Years & Years unveiled their brand-new single “Crave,” a pounding, house-influenced pop track about love, sex and domination. Along with releasing the track, Years & Years also announced the release of their third studio album, Night Call, which is due Jan. 7, 2022, via Interscope Records.

In the new video for the single, viewers get a glimpse of Alexander, decked out in head-to-toe blue body makeup, surrounded by a series of fantastical beings with long, pointy ears going out of their way to seduce the singer. As the video progresses, things get significantly kinkier, as Alexander is introduced to some leather-clad individuals who eventually chain him up and start whipping him with a cat o’ nine tails as he sings, “The only thing I crave is the pain from you.”

Speaking about the new song in a statement, Alexander said that he wanted to create something that not only fulfilled his own fantasy, but also explored the power dynamics of his past relationships. “‘Crave’ is a playful way of inhabiting the deranged sexual energy I’ve always wanted,” he said. “In the past I felt like I’ve been dominated by toxic relationships, and I felt like it would be fun to turn it on its head.”

The new album — which will be Years & Years’s first album as Alexander’s solo project rather than a three-person synth-pop trio — will reportedly see the singer exploring some new musical territory, leaning into the French house and disco-inspired stylings that have permeated their last few singles. But, Alexander adds in a statement that the escapism that’s been essential to Years & Years’s musical success will remain in place. “I was writing from a fantastical space, stuck in the same four walls. I wanted to have as much pleasure as possible in the music,” he said.
